Mouth to Meow-th: Mass. firefighter revives cat

Wed Sep 10, 8:26 PM ET

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - A lucky cat owes one of its nine lives to a firefighter who revived it with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Al Machado rescued the cat from a burning apartment Tuesday, telling The Standard Times of New Bedford that he saw immediately that it needed air.
Machado began performing mouth to mouth on the animal as he carried it outside.
Video shot at the scene shows Machado bent over, breathing into the cat’s mouth several times. The cat, a tiger angora, was revived and resting comfortably soon after.

No humans were injured in the fire. A man and woman whose last known address was the building that burned were arrested and charged with arson, authorities said.

Two other cats died in the second-floor apartment, but two dogs there were saved with the help of oxygen from paramedics and animal rescue personnel. Pets on the other two floors — including a ferret and even some frogs on the first floor — were all saved.

Asked what it tasted like to give mouth-to-mouth to a cat, Machado laughed, grimaced and said: “Like fur.”

Man in wheelchair robs Texas 7-Eleven of condoms

Fri Sep 5, 9:57 PM ET

DALLAS - A robber rolled into a Dallas convenience store came armed with a bat and a knife. He left with a lot of condoms and an energy drink.

Dallas police Cpl. Kevin Janse said Friday that a man in a wheelchair entered a Dallas 7-Eleven Wednesday afternoon, rolled straight toward the cash register and beat it with a baseball bat until it opened.

But he didn’t grab any cash. Instead, police say he stole 10 boxes of condoms and an energy drink before making his getaway Wednesday afternoon.

Janse says the suspect may have been homeless and was likely intoxicated at the time of the robbery.

Out with the old… Posted by nicole

On Friday, my company told me that they were “eliminating the position.”  A few hours later, the agency I work for placed me somewhere new.

I started this morning at the new place.  That should tell you something right there if I’m already fucking blogging from this place.

Basically, they sat me down at a desk and said here ya go.  No responsibilities.  No duties.  No anything… just sit around and answer phones… they ring like once an hour and I look forward to it.

For some people, this would be a complete dream.  For me it’s a bit… I dunno… bullshit.  Work makes the day go by faster and if I’m just sitting here staring… well…

Maybe it’ll be better after a bit of time.  I’m going to try and install WoW tomorrow.  There’s no restrictions on the computer.  Maybe for the rest of today I’ll just crank out some homework.

The man’s Dad will be here in about 4 hours.  We spent the WHOLE morning scrubbing and cleaning and dusting… yuck.  I will take tons of pictures of the kitties when they get here tonight though.

We raided Kara at lvl 68 on Thursday.. downed Maiden then it was too late.  Guild really has a hard time getting it started.

So I’ve been feeling like I could eat way too much lately.  I went to the Doctor yesterday for another fill.  After weighing me and seeing that I’m still losing weight, on top of the fact that I throw up at least twice a week from eating to fast, I was denied a fill.  Oh well… it’s nice to see my weight is still going down.  She said it was OKAY that I’m eating a bit more, as long as I’m not gorging myself and my numbers are still going down.

I really got to starting tracking my calories again, but I get so distracted.  Also, if we go out to eat or something, it gets kind of tricky to track all of that.

I have a million assignments due on Tuesday for school.  More drama and rants there but I’m kinda on a time crunch.  TONS OF PICS of the kitties later!

Priest Builds Posted by nicole

I’m debating between two priests builds…

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bxghzhoZcLtcf0qVhVo - This is my own personally modified version of a CoH build… Not really strong CoH, because only 2% instead of 10% mana reduction, but I really dig the reduced threat, Imp PWS, and Imp PWF, I think they’re essential to either build I go with.

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bxghzhhtbcktcLtcs - This is a strong discipline build with the reduction and mana/crit stuff from the Holy tree.  I think this is probably better as a support healer while the above is good across the board…

I’m leaning towards the first one, but I have to debate a lil more.

Unification Wars Posted by nicole

I haven’t mentioned this site before, but it is an awesome lil browser.  I spend most of my day on it at work.  Text based, not a lot of graphics, BUT VERY intricate.  All about managing your galactic empire, controlling your fleet, managing a popultion, etc.  Very awesome.  Sign up through my link and it makes you my vassal, so I’ll hook you up with some $$ and food to get started.

Worky Work Busy Bee Posted by nicole

Lot of shit has gone on recently.

Somewhat made amends with my grandparents. That almost caused me a heart attack, but whatever. It’s for the best.

Deucey passed away on July the 27th. Tonto the kitten entered our lives two days later not as a replacement but because she was in need. We still love Deucey and miss him dearly. On Saturday, the man’s dad is coming down from Indiana and bringing our other two cats down, Poos and Butters. I’m taking Tonto to the vet on Friday to make sure she’s good to be around the other cats.

We actually have a wedding venue now. Marriott Grand Ballroom. Great food, unlimited drinks, dancing, you know, a NORMAL wedding reception within our budget. We’re elated that the search is finally over. Dad signed off on it, so we’re actually good to go with it.

School started last Monday and the homework is already piling in.  It was total bullshit that I had to buy access to this www.coursecompass.com.  It is a fucking port of Blackboard, which my tutition already pays for.  I spent an additional 100 bucks on CourseCompass fees.  God only fucking knows why my professors like to torture us financially AND mentally. I’m trying to stay on it during the week so I don’t lose my weekends. After all, must have WoW time.

Speaking of, the man and I are both level 67. Our guild is taking us into Kara on Thursday, provided we hit level 68 prior to then. Thank God they removed the Kara attunement. Lol. We won’t have much play time this weekend though, as his Dad is coming down. But, Monday is a holiday, so who knows. Woot for 3 day weekend.

Staff Ghosts

Staff Ghosts are special ghosts that can be unlocked in Time Trial mode by getting good times on each course. Similar to F-Zero GX, staff ghosts are the ghost data of the game’s developers who can obviously play the game

quite well, so beaing able to beat even one (if not all) of the Staff Ghosts is quite a feat. To unlock them you must do so one at a time. Race a course in time trial mode and if you come within about five to seven seconds of the actual Staff Ghost time (times are listed in the chart below) then that particualr ghost is unlocked and you can race against it in Time Trial.

So Full Of… Posted by nicole

Deuce is doing alright.  He was doing awesome on Saturday with his fluids, meds, and food.  He’s still eating and drinking, but seems very lethargic.  I have a call into the vet, hopefully it gets better.

I’ve dropped some more weight.  This last fill was the money spot!  I eat and feel physically full very quickly.  I almost threw up on Saturday on some “walking taco” because I was eating it far too fast.  I have to slow down and focus yet.  But, working on it.  I can feel the weight melting off… speaking of…

Got a dress for that wedding this weekend and the man HATED it.  So, we went ahead and bought a new one.  *roll eyes*  I ended up getting a black one that’s gathered on the right.  We’re going for a spray tan on Thursday and I’m getting a haircut and a wax.  Up in Minneapolis there is a Star Wars exhibit at the science musuem that the man is pretty excited about seeing.

I can’t wait… not so much to go to the wedding but just to have a nice, long, 4 day weekend.  I took off Monday even though we’re back Sunday just to kind of recoup.  No homework this weekend (YAY!) as I had finals all day yesterday.

We have a meeting tonight with this lady from Premier Catering.  She’s going to take a look at the house and see if we can make it work.

We found this lil guy abandoned at my work.  The man wasn’t too happy with the cost, but I told him… you can’t resist…. his name is Deuce and he is 15 ounces.

I got my third fill on Monday and it was far different than any other one I’ve experienced.  My feeling now versus like last week is the difference between night and day.

First off, when she did the fill (3cc to equal 10cc in a 14cc band) it felt like someone pulling on a draw string and tightening my stomach.  I never experienced that before.  Secondly, when she had me eat some jello afterwards, I could barely keep it down and I certainly couldn’t finish the lil personal container.

So, I’m on all liquids for a few days, but, I’m totally loving it.  I’m so not hungry, I’m like the ANTI-HUNGER machine at this point.  The man got me a ChicFilA milkshake yesterday (sometimes he rocks so hard it’s sick) and I took 1/2 of it or so, put some protein powder and milk in there, and got some calories in me.  Took me like 30 minutes to drink it or so.  Filled me to the brim.  I feel like I did post surgery (like week 1 and 2), which is awesome.  I do not expect this SUPER-TIGHT feeling to last very long.

I expect my stomach will relax around Friday, but I am told the opening to my stomach is now the size of an eraser head.  I’m good with that.  I consumed a total of about 400 calories yesterday, and looking at the same amount for today.  This is having an affect on my energy level.  The man practically had to drag my carcass into bed last night at 10:30!  My body will adjust though, as it usually does.  Once I am not so tight, I will shoot for around 900 calories a day, which should help my energy level.

Loving this fill so far, even though the extreme tightness causes some irritation and mmmmrgglllll gggrrrrrggggglllll at times.

Here are some items that I wish I knew about Lap Band and no one told me…

  • Everyone says your food choices are important.  Well, duh.  This is stressed by saying ice cream and cakes and such will go down fine, stay away from them, blah blah blah.  I don’t think the importance of food choices was stressed enough.  For example, for dinner, if you have a piece of chicken and veggies versus a piece of chicken and rice, this makes all the difference in the world.  Sometimes a ~200-400 calories difference!  I can’t eat the rice, veggies, and a piece of chicken.  I must opt for the veggies and the chicken, no rice in order to keep losing weight.  Little things like this go on throughout the whole day.  I ate a cookie yesterday… sure, it was one serving and it gave me the filling I needed to get to my next mean… however, I could have had that same filling “full” feeling from some grapes or an orange.  Lil things… I wish I knew about these up front.

  • Fills are sooooo gradual.  From 2weeks out of surgery till about 2 months, you got your will power and just about nothing else.  I expected more than this… I dunno if I thought I was going to be different or what… but it’s really hard until you get filled to where you need to be.

  • Tracking every calorie is important in the beginning, until you see that your fill is leaving you where you want to be.  How will you know if you’re at the right place if you can’t see at a glance exactly what is in the stuff you’re eating.  We all have problems controlling our eating, or we wouldn’t have gotten banded it in the first place.  Tracking helps keep that in checked.

  • This is not a magic button.  This is not like bypass.  This is not the easy way.  This is not the simple way out.  It’s a tool.  Nothing more… willpower and self-discipline MUST be there.  I can’t stress this enough.
